How to Make a Car Accident Diagram
Use the diagram maker while the crash is still fresh in your memory. You do not need an account, and the tool does not upload your diagram unless you explicitly choose to send it.
- Choose the closest road layout. Start with a four-way intersection, T-intersection, straight road, highway, curve, or parking lot. Rotate the road if the direction does not match the scene.
- Place every vehicle or person involved. Add your vehicle, the other vehicle, a truck, motorcycle, or pedestrian. Drag each object to the position that best matches what you remember.
- Show direction of travel. Rotate the vehicles and add arrows to show where each person was moving before the collision.

What to Include in an Accident Diagram
A useful car accident sketch should make it easy for another person to understand the basic sequence. Include as many of these details as you can remember:
- The type of road, intersection, highway, curve, or parking aisle
- The direction each vehicle was traveling
- The location of your vehicle and every other vehicle
- The approximate point of impact
- Direction arrows showing the movement before the crash
- The final resting position of each vehicle
- Relevant traffic signals, stop signs, lane markings, or parking spaces
- The date and location of the collision on your printed copy
- Short notes about anything the simplified diagram cannot show
Do not guess at a detail just to complete the picture. If you are unsure, label it as uncertain when you discuss the diagram with an insurer, police agency, or attorney.

Rear-End Accident Diagram
Choose the straight-road layout. Place both vehicles in the same lane, rotate them in the same direction, and put the impact marker between the front of the following vehicle and the rear of the lead vehicle. Use arrows to show whether one vehicle was stopped or both were moving.
T-Bone or Intersection Accident Diagram
Choose the four-way or T-intersection layout. Place one vehicle on each road, rotate them toward the intersection, and mark the side-impact location. Direction arrows can show which vehicle traveled straight, turned left, or entered from a side street.
Parking Lot Accident Diagram
Choose the parking-lot layout. Show whether a vehicle was parked, backing out, or traveling through the drive aisle. Place the impact marker at the corner, side, or rear where contact occurred. Include nearby parking spaces because they help explain visibility and vehicle movement.
Lane-Change or Sideswipe Diagram
Choose the highway or straight-road layout. Place the vehicles in adjacent lanes and rotate them in the same direction. Add an angled arrow for the vehicle that changed lanes, then mark the point where the sides of the vehicles made contact.
Multi-Car Accident Diagram
Add each vehicle separately and use arrows to show the order of movement. Mark the first impact you remember, then position all vehicles where they stopped. For a complicated chain reaction, add numbered notes to the printed copy so the sequence is not confused with the final positions.
Using a Car Accident Diagram for Insurance
A diagram can help organize your recollection when you report a claim or explain what happened. It may be useful alongside scene photographs, vehicle-damage photos, witness information, video, and the official accident report.
Keep a copy of the first diagram you create. If you later add details, save the updated version separately rather than replacing the original. A diagram should supplement the underlying evidence; it should not contradict photographs or state details you do not actually remember.

Build a Step-by-Step Accident Replay
A single final-position sketch does not always explain a complicated collision. Accident Studio lets you create multiple steps—such as before the crash, the moment of impact, and where the vehicles stopped—and play them back as a simple visual sequence.
Start with the earliest scene you remember, duplicate it as the next step, and move only the vehicles or objects that changed position. For a chain-reaction or multi-car crash, add another step for each important impact. The resulting replay is still an illustration, but it can make the sequence much easier to discuss.
Point of Impact vs. Final Vehicle Position
These details answer different questions and should not be combined into one marker:
- Approach position and direction show where each road user came from before contact.
- Point of impact means the approximate location of the first contact you remember. It is not necessarily where the vehicles stopped.
- Damage location identifies the area of each vehicle that was struck. Photograph it separately rather than trying to reproduce every dent in the diagram.
- Final position shows where each vehicle or person came to rest after the collision. If a vehicle was moved before you saw it, say that in the notes instead of presenting the location as certain.
For a simple crash, show these stages with the Before, Impact, and After steps. For a chain reaction, add a separate step for each impact you can identify. Do not infer a speed, distance, or path that you do not remember.
Use Your Own Scene Image as a Background
If the simplified road layouts do not match the location, you can add a road photo, aerial image, or screenshot that you are permitted to use as a local background. The image stays in your browser and becomes part of your saved project or exported diagram; it is uploaded to Law Badgers only if you choose to include and send the diagram.

Save and Reopen Your Accident Diagram Project
Download the project file if you want to continue editing later or preserve each reconstruction step. The project file stores the diagram objects, scene settings, and crash details you entered. Keep it somewhere private because it may contain information about the collision.
