Arizona Summer Heat and Your Car: Blowouts, Breakdowns, and Road Dangers
When pavement temperatures in Phoenix reach 160°F+ during summer, the heat becomes a direct cause of accidents. It’s not just discomfort — extreme heat causes tire blowouts, road surface damage, mechanical failures, and driver impairment.
Tire Blowouts
Hot pavement superheats tire rubber, increasing internal pressure and weakening the tire structure. Underinflated tires are especially vulnerable — the flexing generates additional heat that can cause catastrophic failure at highway speeds.
A front tire blowout at 65 MPH on I-10 can send your vehicle across multiple lanes. A rear blowout can cause a spin. The debris field from a blowout can cause multi-vehicle pileups.
Prevention: Check tire pressure in the morning before driving (heat increases pressure readings later in the day). Replace tires with worn tread. Don’t overload your vehicle.
Road Surface Damage
Extreme heat causes asphalt to soften and deform, creating ruts, potholes, and uneven surfaces. Highway expansion joints can buckle in extreme heat, creating sudden bumps. Road defects caused by heat damage may create liability for ADOT or city governments.
Mechanical Failures
Cooling systems, batteries, and belts are all stressed by extreme heat. A vehicle breakdown on the shoulder of a Phoenix freeway in July is dangerous — stranded drivers have been struck by passing vehicles, and heat exposure can cause heat stroke within minutes.
If your vehicle breaks down, stay in your car with the hazard lights on if possible. Move to the right shoulder as far as you can. Call for assistance immediately.
Driver Impairment
Heat-related fatigue is real. Dehydration impairs cognitive function and reaction time similar to mild intoxication. Glare from the sun — particularly during the low-angle evening sun in summer — creates temporary blindness that causes crashes.
If Heat Contributed to Your Crash
If a tire blowout, road defect, or mechanical failure contributed to your accident, the responsible party may not be the other driver — it could be a tire manufacturer (product liability), a road maintenance agency (government liability), or a mechanic who failed to identify a problem.
