October Is Apple Season in Arizona
Enough with the pumpkin spice everything! October is apple season! Time for apple cider, caramel apples, apple pie, apple crisp, and a ton of other apple treats.
Apple Varieties for Arizona
Arizona’s climate supports several apple varieties that thrive in our warmer conditions:
Anna Apples — Crisp, golden delicious style. Sweet, semi-acidic, and perfect for warmer climates. The tree is gorgeous in bloom with rose-colored flowers.
Beverly Hills — A white, medium-size fruit with pale yellow skin and red blush. Sweet, slightly tart, and a long-time Southern California favorite that does well in Arizona.
Ein Shemer — Pale yellow, medium-sized, sweet and semi-acidic. Perfect for applesauce. Requires only 350 chill hours.
Gordon — Medium to large round apples with green skin overlaid with bright red. Crisp, juicy, sweet-tart. Very heavy production in areas with mild winters — that’s us.
Golden Dorsett — Perfect for warmer climates. Can grow year-round depending on temperature. Flavor is actually better in apples that are slightly shaded.
