After Dark: Nighttime Fatal Crash Data in Phoenix

Car Accidents

The sun sets, and Phoenix roads get deadly. Our analysis of NHTSA FARS data reveals that a disproportionate number of fatal crashes in the Phoenix metro area occur between dusk and dawn — despite significantly lower traffic volumes during those hours.

The Numbers

More than half of fatal crashes in Maricopa County happen during low-light or dark conditions. This is dramatically out of proportion to traffic volume — nighttime traffic is roughly one-third of daytime volume, yet it produces more than half the fatalities.

Why Nighttime Is So Deadly

Impaired driving. DUI crashes are overwhelmingly a nighttime problem. Bar closing times (2 AM in Arizona) produce a predictable spike in impaired driver crashes. The dram shop law can hold bars liable for overserving patrons who then cause crashes.

Reduced visibility. Many Phoenix arterials have inadequate street lighting. The West Phoenix corridor is particularly dangerous after dark. Pedestrians in dark clothing on unlit roads are nearly invisible to drivers.

Speed. Lower traffic volumes at night encourage higher speeds. A crash at 55 MPH is exponentially more deadly than one at 35 MPH.

Fatigue. Drowsy driving is responsible for an estimated 6,000 fatal crashes per year nationwide. The long, straight stretches of I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson are particularly prone to fatigue-related crashes.

Wrong-way drivers. Arizona’s wrong-way driver epidemic is almost exclusively a nighttime problem, typically involving impaired drivers entering the freeway via exit ramps.

Protecting Yourself After Dark

Drive defensively. Keep your headlights and high beams properly aimed. Watch for pedestrians, especially on arterials through West Phoenix. Never drive drowsy on I-10. And carry UIM coverage — nighttime crash at-fault drivers are more likely to be uninsured.

If you’ve been in a nighttime crash, evidence preservation is critical. Lighting conditions, road markings, and witness availability are all time-sensitive. Call (833) DTF-IGHT immediately.
