Loop 202 Crashes: Santan and Red Mountain Freeway Accident Analysis

The Loop 202 — split between the Red Mountain Freeway (north) and the Santan Freeway (south) — serves as the primary freeway for the fast-growing East Valley. As Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler have exploded in population, the 202 has become increasingly dangerous.

Growth Outpacing Infrastructure

The East Valley is one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. The Loop 202 was designed for lower traffic volumes than it now carries, particularly on the Santan segment through Gilbert and Chandler. Rush-hour congestion has become a daily reality, and rear-end collisions during stop-and-go traffic are the most common crash type.

Red Mountain Freeway (Northern 202)

The Red Mountain segment runs through Mesa and connects to the US-60 Superstition Freeway — the second-deadliest highway in Arizona with 253 fatal crashes between 2015 and 2022 (per our NHTSA FARS analysis). The US-60/202 interchange is a complex merging zone that produces frequent collisions.

The segment near ASU in Tempe carries both commuter and student traffic, with volume spikes around university events and the Broadway Curve construction zone.

Santan Freeway (Southern 202)

The Santan Freeway is newer but already congested during peak hours. Key crash areas include the Val Vista Drive interchange, the Gilbert Road interchange, and the connection to the Loop 101.

The Pecos Road extension opened additional capacity but also created new conflict points where drivers unfamiliar with the new configuration merge unsafely.

Truck Traffic on the 202

The 202 carries significant commercial traffic connecting East Valley distribution centers to I-10 and I-17. Truck accidents on the 202 are particularly dangerous given the high speed differential between loaded commercial vehicles and passenger cars during congested conditions.
