Loop 101 Accident Data: One of Arizona's Most Dangerous Freeways

The Loop 101 — known as the Agua Fria Freeway on the west, the Pima Freeway through the northeast, and the Price Freeway through the southeast (Tempe/Chandler) — is one of the busiest and most dangerous freeways in the Phoenix metro area. Our analysis of federal crash data tells a disturbing story.

Loop 101 by the Numbers

The Loop 101 circles the Phoenix metro area from Glendale through Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and back through the West Valley. It carries massive commuter traffic during rush hours and event traffic near State Farm Stadium, Scottsdale Fashion Square, and Tempe Marketplace.

Our NHTSA FARS analysis identified the Loop 101 among the highest-fatality freeways in Arizona. The interchanges where the 101 meets other major freeways — particularly the I-17 interchange in the north, the Loop 202 interchange in the east, and the I-10 interchange in the west — are concentrated crash zones.

Where Crashes Concentrate on the 101

Scottsdale segment (Pima Freeway): The stretch between Indian Bend Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard carries heavy traffic at all hours. Rear-end collisions during rush hour are the most common crash type. The interchange at Scottsdale Road is particularly congested.

Tempe/Chandler segment: Where the 101 meets the Loop 202 near Chandler Fashion Center, complex merging patterns produce daily collisions. This interchange handles traffic from two of the busiest freeways in the East Valley.

Glendale/Peoria segment (Agua Fria Freeway): Event traffic near State Farm Stadium creates periodic surges that overwhelm the freeway. Post-game DUI crashes spike on this segment.

When 101 Crashes Are Most Dangerous

Consistent with our broader Phoenix crash data, the most dangerous time on the 101 is Friday between 3-6 PM. Morning rush hour (7-9 AM) produces more fender-benders, while evening rush produces more severe injuries due to higher speeds and driver fatigue.

What to Do After a Loop 101 Crash

The 101 moves fast — 65 MPH posted, often 70+ in practice. At those speeds, even a “minor” collision can produce serious injuries including whiplash, spinal injuries, and traumatic brain injuries.

If you’ve been in a crash on the 101, follow our accident checklist, seek medical attention immediately, and don’t talk to the insurance company before calling an attorney.
