Loop 101 Accident Statistics: 189 Fatal Crashes on Phoenix's Busiest Loop
The Loop 101 — Agua Fria on the west side, Pima on the east — is one of the most heavily trafficked freeways in the Phoenix metro. It connects Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Glendale, and Peoria in a massive arc around the valley.
It also recorded 189 fatal crashes between 2015 and 2022, according to our analysis of NHTSA FARS data.
Where the Fatal Crashes Happen
The Loop 101 isn’t uniformly dangerous. Our data shows fatal crash concentrations at specific segments.
The Scottsdale corridor between the Loop 202 interchange and Shea Boulevard sees heavy commuter traffic and frequent rear-end collisions during rush hour.
The I-17 interchange is one of the most complex merge zones in the valley, with traffic weaving between I-17 northbound, I-17 southbound, and the 101 in both directions.
The US-60 interchange in Tempe/Mesa is another high-conflict zone where loop traffic meets east-west freeway traffic.
The Agua Fria (west side) between Thunderbird and the I-10 carries less traffic than the Pima side but sees higher-speed crashes due to more open road conditions.
2,353 Total Accident Calls
Beyond fatal crashes, Phoenix Police records show 2,353 police-dispatched accident calls on the Loop 101 corridor. That’s roughly 8 accidents per week, year-round.
The peak window mirrors the broader Phoenix pattern: Friday between 3-6 PM is when the highest volume of 101 crashes occur, driven by rush hour congestion, lane-change conflicts, and fatigue at the end of the work week.
After a Loop 101 Accident
Freeway accidents at highway speeds produce more severe injuries than surface-street crashes — the physics of a 65 mph collision versus a 35 mph collision are dramatically different. Whiplash, spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple fractures are common in Loop 101 crashes.
If you’ve been injured on the 101, follow our complete accident guide and contact an attorney before speaking with any insurance company. The statute of limitations is two years, but evidence disappears fast — skid marks fade, surveillance footage gets overwritten, and witnesses forget details.
