Gap Insurance — Why You Need It if You're Upside Down on Your Car Loan
Your car is totaled in an accident. The insurance company says it’s worth $18,000. But you still owe $24,000 on your car loan. You’re now without a car AND $6,000 in debt for a vehicle that no longer exists.
This is the “gap” — and it’s shockingly common. With car prices elevated and long-term financing (72 and 84-month loans) becoming standard, millions of drivers owe more than their vehicle is worth. Gap insurance covers that difference.
How Gap Insurance Works
If your vehicle is totaled, the at-fault driver’s insurance (or your collision coverage) pays the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle — what it was worth immediately before the accident. Gap insurance pays the difference between the ACV payout and your remaining loan balance.
Without gap insurance, you’re responsible for that difference out of pocket — while also needing to find transportation.
Gap Insurance vs. Your Injury Claim
Gap insurance covers your vehicle loan shortfall only. It does not affect or reduce your personal injury claim for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. These are completely separate.
Do You Need It?
You likely need gap insurance if you put less than 20% down, you have a loan term longer than 48 months, you drive a vehicle that depreciates quickly, or you rolled negative equity from a previous vehicle into your current loan.
Gap insurance is available through your auto insurer (usually very cheap — $20-50 per year) or through the dealership at the time of purchase (usually more expensive).
What About Diminished Value?
Diminished value claims apply when your car is repaired, not totaled. If your car is a total loss, the ACV payout replaces the vehicle entirely. Gap insurance ensures the loan is fully covered.
