Labor Day — Celebrating American Workers
On Labor Day, we celebrate the many contributions of American workers to the prosperity and success of the United States. American workers built our cities, constructed a system of railroads spanning the continent, made American manufacturing the envy of the world, and continue to drive our economy forward.
A Brief History
Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. It grew out of the labor movement of the late 19th century, when workers organized to fight for better wages, reasonable hours, and safe working conditions. Many of the protections we take for granted today — the 8-hour workday, workplace safety standards, the right to organize — were won through the efforts of American workers.
Workplace Safety Today
While conditions have improved dramatically since the industrial revolution, workplace injuries remain a serious problem. Construction workers, warehouse employees, delivery drivers, and healthcare workers face daily risks. In Arizona, if you’re injured on the job, workers’ compensation is designed to cover your medical expenses and lost wages.
But the system doesn’t always work the way it should. Claims get denied, benefits get cut short, and employers sometimes retaliate. If your workplace injury is caused by a third party — a negligent driver, a defective product, or a reckless subcontractor — you may have claims beyond workers’ comp.
