Fourth of July in Phoenix — Celebrate Responsibly
There’s nothing more American than the Fourth of July. It’s a day we can all come together and celebrate the birth of our country. But it’s also one of the most dangerous holidays of the year — between fireworks injuries, drunk driving, and heat-related emergencies, Phoenix ERs see a major surge every July 4th weekend.
Fireworks in Arizona
Arizona allows the sale and use of “permissible consumer fireworks” — sparklers, ground spinners, fountains, and snap caps. Aerial fireworks, firecrackers, and Roman candles are illegal under A.R.S. § 36-1606. Many Arizona cities have additional local restrictions.
Fireworks injuries can be severe: burns, eye injuries, lacerations, and hearing damage. If you’re injured by someone else’s illegal or negligent use of fireworks, that person — and potentially the seller — may be liable.
DUI on the Fourth
The Fourth of July consistently ranks as one of the deadliest holidays for drunk driving nationwide. Phoenix police and the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety run enhanced DUI patrols over the holiday weekend. Arizona’s DUI penalties are among the toughest in the nation.
If you’re planning to drink, plan your ride home first. Rideshare, designated driver, or just stay put. And if a drunk driver injures you this Fourth of July, the Law Badgers will fight for the compensation you deserve.
Heat Safety
July in Phoenix means 110°F+ temperatures. If you’re spending the day outdoors — at a barbecue, parade, or fireworks show — drink water constantly, seek shade, and watch for signs of heat stroke, especially in children and elderly family members.
Have a safe and happy Independence Day, Phoenix.
